Cat No: Delaware Tercentenary 193

image Delaware Tercentenary 1638-1938 70mm Silver Medal designed and modeled by Ulysses A. Ricci (1888 - 1960) in the original Medallic Arts display box. The typical Delaware Tercentenary medal is the more common 35mm Bronze issue HK-697 of which 5,000 were struck. (An example was sold by Heritage for $138 in Sept. 2018.) This issue possesses the same design as that of the bronze medal (obv: Kalmar Nyckel sailing ship that brought the Swedes to Delaware; rev: State Seal within a wide closed wreath with the 17 names of important individuals related to the history of Delaware - Read, Dickinson, Macdonough, Jones, Shipley, Tatnall, Saulsbury, Ridgely, DuPont, Gray, Bayard, Van Dyke, Layton, Kirkwood, Haslett, McKean, & Rodney.) However, the 70mm issue is comparatively rare with only 100 struck in silver (there were also 5 struck in gold.) It has an original antiqued and brushed finish. Little can be found about this medal other than that it exists and that it had an original issue price of $7.50. Speculation is that these large-size medals were presented to dignitaries and persons of high stature in honor of their service to the community or of the high offices that they may have held. The "CoinTalk" website quotes a "foremost collector of Delaware tokens, medals, and script" as saying he knew of only one piece, and that was in the hands of a "Delaware family." The current cataloger knows of possibly one other 70-mm silver piece that resides in the cabinet of a prominent Delaware coin collector (perhaps the same piece?). In any event, the 70mm silver Delaware Tercentenary medal is very scarce and this is the first piece of its kind that we have had the pleasure to offer. The chance of another offering any time in the near future is very slim. Don't miss this opportunity to own an interesting and important piece of Delaware memorabilia. (Image)
