1787 Fugio Cent Pointed Rays; Cinquefoils after date; States United on rev. Lovely light brown VF or better. The lower left third of the planchet shows lamination on the obv only. Overall, a very nice example. (Fugio Cents were struck in 1788 in New Haven CT by James Jarvis when the fledging US government decided to have money made by private minters on contract. Jarvis bribed the head of the Board of Treasury to obtain a contract that specified that he would mint approximately 32 million Fugios in fulfillment. The government cancelled the contract 18 months later due to Jarvis's mint failing to fulfill the contract. At the time of cancellation, Jarvis had supplied only about 400,000 pieces to the Treasury. Always an experiment (like all colonial issues), there are about 15 known varieties of Fugio Cents. They represent a fascinating chapter in US history, and they are well worth researching by anyone having a serious interest in US numismatics.) (Image)
