(repaired but very fine appearance, some nice Sicily issues */o, good Tuscany including on cover, similar Sardinia, etc., Italy starting with a nice study of early issues noting better shades, etc., good mint issues running throughout and highlights including 1922 Congress set used, good 1930's sets present including 1932 Dante set n.h., airmails with Balbo triptychs mint, also a useful section of Italian Colonies; a nice representation with duplication modest to moderate to be expected.

image (El Paso, Texas) "Paid by deposit, P.O. San Antio". Manuscript endorsement on gray cover with red "Naples N.Y. Jul 3" cds and matching "10" rating on cover to "Samuel H. Stiles, care of Major Van Horn, U.S.A. Ell Passo, by way of Sanantono, Texas"; aging and wear, Fine and early use to El Paso.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

Interesting use to the remote settlement of El Paso at this point in time when travel and routes were still being explored and organized. From San Antonio to El Paso in the summer of 1850, or 1851, involved a long and dangerous journey, probably over recently established southern or lower route explored by Lt. Smith and Lt. Whiting.

Salvatore" handstamp, endorsed "Via London", Torino (9.9) backstamp, red Pt. de Beauvoisin (9.12) transit cds, carried by Cunard Line America from Liverpool Sep. 15th to Boston arriving Sep. 28th, "Boston Br. Packet 29 Sep" exchange cds and matching "10" cent due rating, docketed as received "Oct 30/55", Very Fine, a scarce British Open mail rate to California, ex-Winter.
Estimate; $400 - 600.

Letter went overland via Turin and Pt. de Beauvoisin to Paris and England where it was placed on Cunard steamer to Boston, then traveled by steamship from New York to Aspinwall and Panama to San Francisco. Letter was prepaid 1L 70 centisimi for all transit fees by French and British open mail to U.S. Boston marked 10¢ postage due, the British Open mail rate by British packet from West Coast.

image 1857 (Jul. 29) Boston, Mass. to Leghorn, Tuscany, Italy. Gray folded letter with "Boston, Br. Pkt. 29 Jul" exchange cds and matching bold large "23" cent debit handstamp, carried by Cunard Line America from Boston Jul. 29th to Liverpool arriving Aug. 10th, Aachen (8.11) backstamp and blue "38" kr. debit, Florence (8.17.57) arrival backstamp with red manuscript "30" crazie due rating, Very Fine and choice, Prussian Closed Mail covers to Tuscany are uncommon.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

This large Boston "23" debit handstamp is not recorded by Blake. Aachen marked 38 kreuzer (Austrian) as the debit to Austria for the international rate of 30¢. Transit through Switzerland added 3 kr.(A) for a total Austrian debit of 41 kr.(A) which was passed on to the Kingdom of Sardinia. This was equivalent to 26 crazie in Tuscany to which 4 crazie transit was added. Total postage due marked in red pen was 30 crazie.
