image Ecuador, 1865, 1r yellow chrome. Second period printing, upper half sheet of 45 (positions 1-9//37-45, full o.g., plate varieties including double frameline at bottom (position 4) and part double frameline at top (position 43), margins wide to slightly in, strong color; vertical crease between stamps and a few light stains, F.-V.F., the largest multiple recorded in the yellow chrome shade, with few than five items known.

image Ecuador, 1865, 1r chrome yellow. Horizontal strip of 5 on piece (positions 40-44), red fancy "P.I." cancels of Quito, full margins; pre-use tear affecting first stamp, Very Fine appearance, ex-Olgieser.
Scott No. 4; Estimate $400 - 600.

The P.I. stands for "Porte Interno" or internal fee. It is believed that this cancellation was produced in France and was introduced in 1870.

image Ecuador, 1865, 1r chrome cinnamon, rejoined block of ten and single. Block in at bottom and separated between the second and third horizontal row (block of four and six), all cancelled and tied by dotted lozenges and "Latacunga, 24 Mai, 66" cds's on Judicial wrapper to Riobamba, manuscript "22 oz" weight notation at top center, Very Fine, the largest recorded multiple usage featuring the chrome cinnamon shade, ex-Wolmer and Olgieser.

Chavez & Co. correspondence; includes two in the olive shade with different cancels, other scarce shades including orange and golden orange, as well as yellow orange, yellow buff, yellow chrome, two on bluish paper and one on the elusive and seldom seen grayish paper (Moorhouse cert.), one cover originating Jipijapa and posted in Guayaquil, five certificates accompany, generally Very Fine.

image Ecuador, 1865, 1r yellow buff, horizontal strip of nine and single. Strip positions 19-27. All canceled by fancy "Chimbo" flower circular handstamps prior to being applied to Judicial front to Guaranda, positions 23-24 in strip also show portion of previous manuscript, manuscript "19½ oz" weight endorsement at top, F.-V.F., a rare Postal Fraud usage of the 1r yellow issue, one of two such first issue postal fraud usages known, ex-Saá and Longhi.
Scott No. 4; Estimate $750 - 1,000.

This cover was part of the Saá collection in Ecuador after its find in an Ecuadorian archive. It was subsequently sold to Florenzo Longhi in Italy.
