image India Crash cover - 1936 SCIPIO - boxed DAMAGED BY SEA WATER, on cover franked with GV 6a airmail + ½a from Sylhet (now in Bangladesh) to UK with blue Airmail label and "OFFICIALLY SEALED IN THE RETURNED LETTER SECTION, LONDON POSTAL SERVICE" label pair on reverse. The "Scipio" was operated by Imperial Airways, on the Australia to UK route, crashed on landing at Mirabella Bay, Crete, and sank in a few minutes on Aug 22, 1936. Thirty eight bags of mail were rescued and dried out at the Greek Post Office at Athens, some being forwarded by the next Imperial Airways flight through Athens, arriving in London on Aug 25th, and the rest by rail via Paris, reaching London on Aug 27th or 28th. Mail to other European destinations were carried by rail to Paris and forwarded from there. Suggested Bid $150-200 (Image)
