Folded formular letter addressed to St. Hélier, postmarked "Paris, R. de Cléry, 17 Janv. 71" double circle postmark and franked with pair of 20c Cérès tied by numeral "24" star cancels, backstamped "Jersey, 21 Janv. 71" arrival postmark, Very Fine, a scarce cover addressed to the Channel Islands carried by the Poste de Paris.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

Letter written in England which mentions, "…the bombs are falling like rain", and continues "…we always eat horse, dog, cat and rats".

image 1871 (Jan. 23) Paris to Great Britain. Folded letter to London, postmarked "Paris R. d'Antin, 23 Jan. 1871" double circle, franked with 40c Empire Lauré (10c overpaid) tied by numeral "8" star cancel, backstamped "London Jan 27 70" arrival postmark, Very Fine, carried by the Torricelli.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

Letter is in English, by an English prisoner in a Paris jail, and notes "We have food for yet a good while. It is really enormous to think what stock Paris has. Just think of feeding two millions of souls during more than four months. It is more than I ever would have believed… As I write these lines, the cannon is groaning but Paris is immense and the shells can only reach the far quarters of the city situated near the ramparts."

Put onto Route 3904 carried south to Madison for transfer to the steamboat Route 3052 for Cincinnati. The 87-mile route was contracted from January 1848 at $3,792 a year for a daily service excluding Sundays.

The directional stamp was applied by the bank before being put into the Madison post office. The instruction was unnecessary as the letter would have been bagged for the post office car anyway.
