Schuyler J. Rumsey Philatelic Auctions Sale: 90

Great Britain and British Commonwealth
1847-60 Issues

Sale No: 90
Lot No: 167
Symbol:
Cat No: 36B

image 1859, 12¢ black, plate III. Perfectly centered with large well-balanced margins, proof-like color and impression on crisp white paper, nicely contrasted by face-free strike of red 3¢ integral credit datestamp, a stunning Superb gem, ex-Drucker, "Natalie Grace", with 1982 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates, latter Graded (Superb 98, SMQ $6,750).
Scott No. 36B; $290.

THE FINEST USED EXAMPLE OF THE 12¢ 1857 ISSUE FROM PLATE 3, THE ONLY USED EXAMPLE GRADED SUPERB 98 BY THE P.S.E.

Plate 3 stamps (Scott 36B) are characterized primarily by uneven or broken outer framelines of the design. The subjects on Plate 1, which produced Scott Nos. 17 and 36, have even framelines that were extensively recut. With Plate 3, stamp spacing was increased horizontally to make room for the perforations. While one would expect that in the intervening period since Plate One, that much improvement was made in stamp production and quality, but that was not to be the case with Plate Three. The stamps are of relatively poor quality, missing part or all of many of the frame lines, are blurred in appearance, and were on poorer quality paper. Stamps from both plates with the centering and wide margins evident in this example are extraordinary.

image 1860, 24¢ gray lilac. Perfectly centered within unusually wide margins, bright color, light strike of red grid cancel leaves design clearly visible, a Superb gem, ex-Drucker, "Natalie Grace", with 1999 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates, latter Graded (Superb 98, SMQ $8,500.00).
Scott No. 37; $465.

ONE OF THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES OF THE 24¢ 1860 ISSUE, ONE OF ONLY FOUR USED EXAMPLES GRADED SUPERB 98 BY THE P.S.E. THIS ISSUE IS RARELY ENCOUNTERED IN SUCH OUTSTANDING CONDITION.

Although the 24¢ denomination was introduced in 1857, it was not put into use until July 1860. The issue was demonetized only thirteen months later. The 24¢ denomination was primarily used for the 24¢ U.S.-G.B. treaty rate to the United Kingdom. Toppan Carpenter's typically erratic perforating continued with the 24¢ issue, coupled with the short period of use, are the primary reasons why superb used examples of the 24¢ 1860 are so difficult to find.

It was divulged that Federal troops were on their way to remove Brigham Young as governor, as well as all other Mormon officials. Young threatened to burn Salt Lake City if troops came into the city, and indeed he removed all the in habitants. The troops arrived, but stopped east of the city at Camp Scott. A compromise was reached in mid-June 1858, by which the troops moved straight through to the west on June 28 in order to establish Camp Floyd. This fort, ironically, was named after the Secretary of War, which had been a vigorous proponent of the strife.
