As Odenweller discusses, there are very few London print multiples and this is the only recorded vertical multiple for any value. It is believed that the stamps were cut into rows of 12 for easy storage and record keeping in shillings.

This cover is number L5 of the 8 recorded London shilling bisect covers in Odenweller. This left half offered here is the matching half to the right-half example L4 in the census. This was listed by Mottram in London Philatelist, Vol. 4, May 1895 on page. 125.
Although the 1s value was issued in 1855, no usages are known until after the change of rate that allowed prepayment of 6d per ½ ounce on March 27th 1857. Most of the earliest uses of the 1s were not full stamps, but the celebrated shilling bisects from the Mottram correspondence. This bisect came from a new find and was first offered at public auction by William Carson in Auckland on December 2nd 1985. It was described as having come from the files of Edinburgh solicitors. The 24 Richardson bisect usages are recorded from July 17, 1858 to July 19, 1859. With the availability of the 6d stamp in August 1859, the use of the 1s bisect was rendered unnecessary. AN ATTRACTIVE THREE-COLOR FRANKING PREPAYING THE 9D RATE TO THE UNITED KINGDOM VIA SUEZ AND MARSEILLES.
This cover contradicts the suggestion by Kirk and other authors that the Marseilles mail arrived in that port on April 16th by the P&O "Sultan". As this ship was late arriving at Alexandria, contemporary newspapers show all mail was put on board the "Mooltan" to be trans-shipped at Malta to the Royal Navy vessel HMS "Icarus". This cover is correctly prepaid 9d for a ¼ oz. letter to the United Kingdom via Marseilles, which is a premium of 3d per ¼ ounce over the standard rate via Suez and Southampton.
