1872 stampless letter from Germany to Canada, endorsed "by Steamer via Cork & Ostende", with Ludwigshafen 12 May cds and sender's "Clemens Grohe" cachet. The letter was sorted on Allan Line Steamer "Sarmatian", the "Canadian PKT/W" cds being applied and the letter charged "1", the previous "4" rate being crossed out. The "Canadian Pkt" datestamps were used on the Allan Line Steamers from Liverpool to Canada, via Londonderry. However they appear to have only been applied to paid and found to be unpaid by the sorters on board ship and so charged postage due, with London transit and Hamilton May 28 arrival pmks (Image)
