This letter was carried per "Northam" that departed Sydney July 27th to Marseilles arriving Sep. 13th, then to Southampton arriving Sep. 19th. Prior to September 1863, the rate was the standard 6d per ½oz plus 3d per ¼oz for the cross-France portion, so this item weighed less than ½oz. ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED 1857 1S EMERALD-GREEN USAGES, AN EXCEPTIONAL FRANKING PREPAYING THE 1S 2D RATE TO THE UNITED STATES VIA SUEZ AND THE U.K.
There are only three covers recorded with the emerald-green and four recorded with the blue-green shade, primarily to pay rates on letters to the United Kingdom. Only two domestic covers are known. The cover offered here is the only 1858 1s issue used to the United States and the earliest recorded with stamps paying the postage.
