1932 (19 May) return flight of the DOX cover with on-board cancelation, violet "America-Europa Flugschiff DO-X" cachet, with preprinted address and Berlin 27.5.32 arrival, v.f., with period newspaper clippings tracing the progress of the DO-X on its 19th month journey (the Do X took off from Friedrichshafen, Germany, on 3 November 1930 for a transatlantic test flight, via the Netherlands, England, France, Spain, and Portugal, where a fire interrupted the journey for six weeks. The flying boat continued with a few more mishaps and delays along the Western coast of Africa, Cape Verde to Natal in Brazil and New York, arriving on 27 August 1931, almost ten months after departing Friedrichshafen. Another nine months were spent in New York when the Great Depression dashed Dornier's marketing plans for the Do X, and it departed on 21 May 1932 via Newfoundland and the Azores to Berlin, where it arrived on 24 May and was met by a cheering crowd of 200,000) (Image)
