image Australian States: Victoria, 1856 (Apr. 16) Melbourne, Victoria to Newark N.J. Buff cover bearing Victoria, 6d yellow orange (17), three margins tied by "1" barred numeral oval, matching "Melbourne, Victoria, AP 16, 1856" rimless oval backstamp, carried as endorsed by Clipper Frances Henty via Cape Horn to England, red London (7.17) transit backstamp and manuscript "28" cent debit to U.S., carried by Cunard Line Arabia from Liverpool Jul. 19th to Boston arriving Jul. 30th, "Boston Br. Pkt. 30 Jul" exchange cds backstamp and matching "33" due handstamp for 33¢ rate, Very Fine.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

This is an example of the intended 6d empire rate, but considered completely unpaid in England. This provides evidence that England did not withdraw their retaliatory rate with Victoria in November 1855.

THE ONLY RECORDED 30¢ FRENCH MAIL RATE TO AUSTRALIA CORRECTLY SENT VIA FRENCH PACKET.

Starnes lists a 30¢ French Mail rate to Australia from 1857 to 1870 - this may be the only properly carried example surviving. Allan Line Packets were treated as American Packets by the USA, but British Packets by France - which explains the French "BR" handstamp.
