Gray folded letter with partial strike of red cds and bearing 10¢ green, type II (14) horizontal pair, margins all around, tied by grid cancels, endorsed "p. first mail steamer 'Arago' " but arrived too late for her Jan. 12th department from New York, red "New-York, Am. Pkt., Jan 19" exchange cds and matching "TOO LATE" straightline, despite 1¢ underpayment, sent fully prepaid by American Packet by Collins Line Atlantic departing New York Jan. 19th to Liverpool arriving Jan. 31st, London (1.31) transit backstamp, Calais (2.1) entry cds and matching "8" décimes due handstamp, Cormmont (2.2) arrival backstamp; missing one leaf but front and back are intact, Very Fine, ex-Walske.

Pkt., Feb 15" exchange backstamps and red "PAID" straightline with pencil "21" cent prepaid rating, carried for Collins Line by Quaker City from New York Feb. 16th to Liverpool arriving Mar. 1st, red London (3.3) transit backstamp, Calais (4.3) entry cds and "8" décimes due handstamp, Cognac (3.5) arrival backstamp.

1856 (Mar. 4) Liverpool, England to Kennebunk, Me. blue cover with Liverpool (3.4) cds and matching large "3/Cents" debit handstamp, carried for Collins Line by Quaker City from Liverpool Mar. 5th to New York arriving Mar. 21st, "N.York Am. Pkt. '24' Mar 21" debit cds, tiny tone spot, ex-Winter., a Very Fine and scarce pair of covers carried east and westbound sailings of the Quaker City for Collins Line.

Cover bearing 1¢ blue (7) and 10¢ green, type IV-II (16-14) horizontal pair, pos. 74-75L, large margins to in at top, all tied by "Washington D.C., Apr 7" cds to Paris, France, red "New York 'Paid 6' Apr 11" credit exchange cds, carried for Collins Line by Alps from New York Apr. 11th to Liverpool arriving Apr. 25th, red Calais (4.25) entry cds; small left edge flaw, Very Fine and rare voyage, Carried on the second of only two voyages by Alps., with 1998 A.P.S. certificate.
Scott No. 16-14; $2,000 as used pair; Estimate $500 - 750.

"Alps" of the Cunard Line was chartered to carry the "Baltic" mails from New York on Feb. 14th 1857. "Baltic" had required extensive voyage repairs after returning to New York on Feb. 6th. On the return voyage, Alps went by way of Boston. No contract mails were carried on the return voyage as the Collins Line had made no arrangements with Cunard for this voyage. See Hubbard's articles in Chronicles 84 and 102.

Folded letter with "New York '18' Nov 21" exchange debit cds, carried for Collins Line by Adriatic from New York Nov. 23rd to Liverpool arriving Dec. 4th, red French (12.5) entry cds with "16" décimes due handstamp; aging along fold. "Adriatic" sailed from New York two days late which is why New York circular datestamp did not show departure date. U.S. debited France 2x9¢=18¢. Postage due of 2x8=16 décimes marked on ambulant from Calais to Paris.

1857 (Dec. 9) Liverpool, England to Boston, Mass., datelined folded letter with red "Liverpool Paid, DE 9 1857" origin cds and red manuscript "1" shilling prepaid packet rating, red "21/Cents" credit rating handstamp, carried as endorsed for Collins Line by Adriatic from Liverpool Dec. 9th to New York arriving Dec. 21st, red "Boston Paid, Am. Pkt., 22 Dec" exchange cds, Very Fine and rare sailing, ex-Hegland., F.-V.F. pair carried on the only voyage of Adriatic, ex-Winter.
