Schuyler J. Rumsey Philatelic Auctions Sale: 84

Canada
Bahamas to Canadian Province (Newfoundland)

Sale No: 84
Lot No: 1042
Symbol:
Cat No: 5

image New Brunswick, 1860, 5¢ brown, unissued. Nicely centered with large margins; scissor trimmed perfs at right, Very Fine for this difficult stamp, ex-Foxbridge. SG No. 13.
Scott No. 5; $16,000.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 5¢ CONNELL.

A printing of 500,000 stamps bearing the head of Charles Connell, the Postmaster General of New Brunswick from 1858 was made with the set of definitives for issue on May 1st 1860. The order had been placed in December 1859 together with that for the other values. After printing, the design was not approved by the Council and a 5¢ stamp bearing the Queen's portrait was ordered. Owing to the episode, Charles Connell resigned his office of Postmaster General in May 1860. He paid the bill of £56 6s. From evidence known so far, these stamps were never issued for postage, no used examples have been found. The bulk of the printing was destroyed.

Scott No. 1R/7R; Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

Reprints were made in 1890 on the authority of Mr. Haggart, Postmaster General of Canada and the plate subsequently destroyed. Probably five sheets were pulled (Lichtenstein in 1938 mentioned six sheets of the 1d, the sheet consisted of 120 stamps only compared to 160 in the other values). Most of these reprints were passed to Hon. W.S. Fielding when Minister of Finance (Premier of Nova Scotia 1884 to 1896). Senator Calder and Lichtenstein purchased the reprints from his estate in 1929. One set in sheets was given to the Royal Philatelic Society, London on April 7th 1938 when Lichtenstein gave a display on Nova Scotia. After keeping examples for their collections the balance was sold to R. Roberts of London who split them.

THE ONLY RECORDED PENCE AND CENTS MIXED FRANKING RECORDED FROM NOVA SCOTIA. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CENTS PERIOD USAGES.

The 1860 Decimal issue was printed by the American Bank Note Company in sheets of 100 and the 1st printing was put on sale on or about October 1st. Pence stamps were withdrawn from sale at the end of September 1860, but could still be used legally in October. Later usages were tolerated.

This cover was carried by Cunard Line "Canada" from Halifax to Boston arriving Oct. 5th where 5¢ inland postage charged to New York. The 1d stamps equaled 2c postage.

Pence and Cents mixed frankings are rare in Canadian philately with this being the only example known from Nova Scotia, while there are only three from Canada and four from Newfoundland.
