image 1840 Islington, England to Red River Settlement Folded Letter, with dateline "Church Missy Institution Islington / May 27th 1840" and addressed to the Reverend J. Smithurst / Red River Settlement / N. W. America. Apparently carried by a Hudson Bay Co. ship to Norway House, on the west coast of Hudson's Bay, then overland by canoe and ox cart to destination. Inside is a neatly written 6 page, cross-written letter discussing interesting subjects such as for example "we have to acknowledge the receipt of the articles you were kind and considerate enough to send for the museum. I can assure you they cut a very respectable figure in it, especially the Esquimaux Lady's Dress, which is quite a novel affair, but may we ask how you can perive of her of so graceful and elegant a habit?". Very fine and a very early cover, as Smithurst arrived there in September 1839. (Image)
