image 1944 Armed Forces Air Letter to Deceased Soldier, from Jean Lovell to her son soldier Jack Lovell, Essex Scottish Regiment, Canadian Arms Forces in Europe. Mailed from Strathroy (Ontario), August 8, 1944. We note the following markings on front or back of the Air Letter: "Field Post Office" 16.AUG.1944; "F.P.O. –T.C.2" 29.SEP.1944; "Field Post Office" 10.OCT.1944; "Ottawa M.P.O.318" 3.FEB.1945. Also handstamped in red "It is regretted that this item is undeliverable and therefore under postal regulations is to be returned to sender", and in pink: “Deceased / Return to Sender”. Numerous annotations in pencil, including: “Deceased 22-9-44 S12P63 – 9/10/44 DR”.
Soldier John Franklin Lovell, no. A/21790, 22 years old, was killed on September 22nd 1944. He was the son of Edgar Franklin Lovell (also a soldier overseas) and of Jean Lovell. He is buried in the Schoonselhof cemetery (near Antwerp) in Belgium. In her letter, his mother writes to her son that his letters of July 20th and 21th were received by the family. She continues: “They tell us all the Canadian casualties from France are being rushed to Canada so if anything should happen to you (which I hope it won’t) then you might get home sooner too…[…] Well darling there is no news here and I just live for your letters so write when ever you can. The radio gives good reports so I hope it will soon be over.” Soldier Jack Lovell was probably killed during the battle of the « crête de Verrières”, near Caen. The Essex Scottish Regiment, formed in Windsor (Ontario), played an important role in this battle which lasted from July 18 to 21, 1944. It suffered 300 casualties, either dead or wounded. Most of the dead soldiers were buried in a cemetery in Normandy. For some unknown reason, Jack Lovell’s grave was transferred to Belgium. (Image)
