image Group of 22 Covers and Cards from World War I, includes a 1916 Christmas card from a member of the 141st Battalion C.E.F., an emergency coal priority card, 7 post cards and 13 covers. Postcards include one with an "Intelligence Officer / Halifax Fortress" oval handstamp from a soldier departing for Europe in 1916, cards with M3-1 Aldershot Militia Camp (x2) and M3-58 or 59 Valcartier Militia Camp cancels and one with an M7-9 Camp Borden machine cancel. Covers include an O.H.M.S. cover with rectangular "Army Record / Office / ? 21 1915 / Canadian Contingent" which is not in Bailey & Toop. Also two covers with either M7-32 Toronto or M7-34 Valcartier machine cancels and two with either M3-27 London or M3-55 Valcartier Militia cancels. Also two Deputy Registrar registered envelopes. Also saw copies of 6 discharge certificates and one service record related to the cards and covers in this lot. The odd fault, overall condition is very fine. (Image)

image Group of 4 Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force Crown Cancels on Cover, 1914-1915, includes 2 covers with Bailey & Toop hammer M4-1, first is dated OCT.15.1914, so it was used on board ship. The envelope is a White Star stationery so was either on the Megantic or the Laurentic. Addressed to Lt. Col. Rennie who went overseas in 1915. A copy of his certificate of service is included. The second M4-1 cancel is dated OCT.23.1914 and addressed to Southern Command in Salisbury. Third cover is dated JAN.11.1915 and sent to Miss Dorothy Brook at Butlers Cross. The 4th cover is a trimmed at left Y.M.C.A. corner card envelope dated FEB.12.1915 to Miss Prentice at Westbourne. The on-piece cancel is dated JAN.17.1915. On board ship cancelled mail is quite scarce. Minor creases, etc., still overall fine to very fine. All are scanned online. (Image)

image Group of Boer War Era Patriotic Post Cards and Covers, with 16 J.C. Wilson patriotic post cards and 3 corner card patriotic envelopes. The Wilson post cards include 5 "Flag that Braved" post cards with the same inscription at bottom and one slightly different. All are unused but one has a stamp added. Also 4 "Rule Britannia" post cards, all unused but one is trimmed slightly at right. Also 4 "Gloria Mundi" cards, with 3 different types, one has a "Private Post Card" printed in blue, other three are red and one does not have the "Stamp Here" printed on it. Blue printing card mailed and has some toning, other three are unused. Also 2 bulldog "What We Have We Hold" unused cards. One is a little grubby and has some minor creases. Also an unused U.S. "Old Glory" card by Wilson. The three envelopes are all unused and are very fine except for the one noted above. image 1917 Canadian Airman with Royal Naval Air Service Cover to Winnipeg, has a "CEN / 9 SQ / SOR" Dover Patrol censor handstamp in red at top left. Sent "On Active Service" by Flt. Lt. Joan P. Hales (who was later killed in action) on AUG.28.1918 as a Naval Air Squadron, they were under the command of the rear Admiral, Dover. The cover comes with a long and interesting letter inside. image 1916 Killed in Action Cover with its Ambulance Cover Used to Return to Sender, mailed Saskatoon on OCT.11.1916 to Lieut. Acheson serving with the Canadian Army in France. Manuscript "Killed in Action" with office signature. Also a small rectangular handstamp reading "R.E. (S.R.) / A.P.S." in purple and a "3" in small circle on back, also in purple. Returned to Canada and received at Ottawa Dead Letter Office on DEC.26.1916 (c.d.s. on back) and sent back to sender on JAN.2.1917 in an O.H.M.S. Dead Letter Office Ambulance cover. image 1918 Damaged by Immersion in Sea Water Soldiers Letter to Québec, Military Honour envelope was on board the S.S. Kenliworth Castle when it almost sank in the English Channel after the ship collided with a convoy destroyer. The collision detonated 2 depth charges and caused significant damages. The ship was towed to Plymouth Sound and beached and the mail (including this one) was salvaged, dried and sent on to destination. Few covers to Canada are known and this one is in typical condition considering what it went through. (Image)

image Group of 6 German Prisoner of War Covers from Camps 132 and 133 in Western Canada, 1942-1945, includes 3 items from Camp 132 at Medicine Hat, a 1942 P.O.W. postcard from Camp 133 at Ozada. This was a temporary tent camp, used until the Lethbridge Camp was built. Also 2 letter sheets from Lethbridge Camp 133. 2 of the pieces are from members of the Luftwaffe, with the balance army. One letter sent airmail with 30c postage paid, other 5 sent postage free, all with "Examined by Censor" or 'Examined by D.B." straight line censor handstamps. All with different censor numbers. Letter sheets are all different printings and the 3 postcards are from 2 different printings. Overall condition is very fine. (Image)

image Group of 68 Military Tobacco Cards, 1918-1945, all from World War II except for one card from World War I. Noted at least 11 different types of cards from a number of cigarette manufacturers. Many have censor handstamps, some with orderly room handstamps and also note 2 George VI 1c postal stationery cards. image 1916 "Killed in Action" Soldier's Letter returned to Sender in an Ambulance Envelope, mailed from Saskatoon and sent to Lieut. D. Atheson with the 24th Canadians, B.E.F. France, arrived at F.P.O. 4.W on NOV.29.1916. Manuscript "Killed in Action" on front along with the signature of whoever wrote it. Cover returned to Canada and received at the Ottawa dead letter office on JAN.22.1917, opened to discover its sender and was placed in an O.H.M.S. envelope and mailed to Miss. Clara in Saskatoon. The O.H.M.S. envelope is missing its back flap, else very fine. (Image)

image Group of 4 Force Canadian Military Covers from Jamaica, 1940-1943, includes a NOV.5.1940 Winnipeg Grenadiers cover sent surface to Halifax, Nova Scotia, with censor officer's signature at left and 3 Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Rgmt. covers from December 1942 and January 1943. All 3 covers sent at the 6d airmail rate, one sent to Halifax and the other 2 to Hamilton. The 2 Hamilton Ontario covers are from Lt. McLean and sent to his wife or mother, both with censor handstamps. Halifax 1942 cover is not censored but has a Y-Force return address on the back. This cover has faults at edges as it is a rather large cover, the other three are very fine. (Image)

image Group of 4 Boer War Covers, 1900-1901, includes a first contingent - A Coy, 2nd Bn. Royal Canadian Regiment cover mailed "Field Post Office / British Army South Africa / FEB.24.1900" c.d.s., arrived at Victoria BC MAR.30 and Chemainus the next day. Also a "Canadian Contingent / South Africa / JUL.9.1900" handstamp on a cover to Australia. This is the second handstamp. Also a Canadian Contingent envelope with the Maple Leaf on back to Windsor Ontario, arrived in Canada in JAN.1900, this cover has major faults. Last is a South African Constabulary - "C" Squadron, Heidelberg from #2187 Trooper W.G. Woodliffe, Bloemfontein to Elmvale, Ontario mailed on DEC.1.1901, with London PAID DEC.21.1901 handstamp on front and Elmvale receiver JAN.7. The 3 better condition covers all have faults, ranging from minor, to a piece missing. (Image)

image Group of 38 Military Airgraphs, 1942-1945, airgraphs were filled out by service men and women then microfilmed. Film cartridges were processed in Canada and then the airgraph entered the mail system - this was to save valuable cargo space on aircraft. This lot includes 16 scarcer illustrated airgraphs for holidays, such as Christmas and Mother's Day. Note airgraphs from Ireland (first day of service), Middle East Force, 8th army in Africa, Mediterranean Force, Italy, Ceylon and New Zealand, as well as a Canadian Navy Sailor Service stopped JUL.9.1945 but resumed for one day only on JUL.11, with a JUL.11 included in this group. Also 22 non-illustrated. Some with envelopes but as the War progressed some were sent without envelopes, just folded. Saw a few faults but mostly very fine. (Image)
