Group of 47 Stampless Covers and Folded Letters, 1819-1872, noting some better postmarks such as a Kingston straightline (1819), Three Rivers changeling, Brant changeling, at least four Kingston Up Can, Leamington UC (new ERD), a nice Toronto CW / PAID in red (1863), a few Montreal in circle in red, and more, plus some interesting rates, with a free franked folded letter with MPP endorsement (1838, with PAID in circle), a few different 1/2 handstamps, a money letter rated 2/3, and more, including a study of 8 Montréal folded letters from the 1840s and 1850s. 1796 Folded Letter London, England to Montréal, datelined in London and addressed to William Grant in Montréal, endorsed “p Ariadne” at bottom (and in the enclosed letter), with a clear strike of “SHIP” straightline at top left, and “QUEBEC” straightline above a “20/IV” Bishop mark datestamp on back, rated “10” in red on front for 8p inland and 2p ship letter upon arrival. Very Fine, with interesting letter inside. The addressee’s firm became an important fur trader and shareholder in the North West Company (a competitor to the Hudson’s Bay Company), use of this “Ship” marking prior to 1800 is rare.
