image Group of Four 1835 Folded Letters from the Jesuites Barracks in Québec to Scotland, all written by William Robertson, of the 79th Highlanders to his mother, sister and aunt, between April 23 and Oct 4, 1835. The letters all have a red double circle QUEBEC datestamp and are rated "1" (the soldier's rate), endorsed by various ranking officers. The letters (each three full pages long) are extremely well written and easy to read, and the first (to his mother) talks about Lent, and the fact that everyone eats fish, which is plentiful at the nearby market. The second (to his sister) describes weather so nice that many balloons filled with gas are ready to take flight, describes in great detail how the Ladies of Québec dress, talking about their dresses, large bonnets and the yards of ribbons holding them up, "I think this bonnet mania will not last". The third (to his mother) explains how he is getting ready for the half yearly inspection, describes the arrival of the 60th Regiment from England, and how his mates "nearly went mad with joy", explains his joy of meeting a boyhood friend in a foreign land and how happy this makes him, the fourth (to his aunt) describes life in the barracks, and more. A fascinating read, and very fine. (Image)
