Cat No: Collection

image Group of Modern Pre-Production Essays and Proofs, from the personal files of retired Canada Post designer Bernard J. Reilander, who designed or oversaw the design and production of these items. The lot starts with a block of four of the 1986 34c Science and Technology stamps with denomination obliterators, printed on gummed stamp paper (along with an issued block for comparison) and two imperforate, but tagged, souvenir sheets of the 1987 34c Exploration of Canada issue also printed on gummed stamp paper; one is identified as AP-1642-2 on the back and the other is AP-642-3 with the latter having denomination obliterators. Another interesting item is a file copy of the 1992 "signed" souvenir sheet for Canada '92 - the back showing handwritten file #CP4864. Also included is a colour gel of the Stockholmia 86 International Exhibition Card, used for proofing by Canada Post staff just prior to printing (plus several printed versions on various papers) and a set of 1976 Christmas promotional items. A great lot for the specialist. Our online photos show most items. (Image)

image Mint Collection in a Hingeless Lighthouse Album, 1852-1976, starts off strong with a #4 (no gum), 7 (plate proof), 8 (no gum), 9 (og), set of First Cents (no #16), complete Large Queens (with many extra shades and papers), complete Small Queens with shades, printings, etc., then complete to the end, including a few extra shades of Edwards, Admirals, as well as all coil singles. The back of the book is also complete as per Lighthouse pages and includes shades and papers of the early dues, first Special Delivery issue (three NH shades), Dies of the War Tax issues, and Registration to the 8c. Most of the collection is of good quality, even though there are several regummed stamps in the beginning (these marked in pencil on pages) plus a few that have no gum, and there are only a few with obvious faults that have not been counted (also indicated as N/C on pages). The majority of the NH material starts in the 1940s, but some others are present, as early as the Small Queens. Overall fine to very fine with many very fine centered stamps, especially where it counts, and catalogue value was only tallied up to 1951. See scans for a good idea. (Image)

image Collection of Mint in Two Lighthouse Hingeless Albums, 1859 to 1991, in slipcases, beginning with the First Cents issue (one 1c) and following with a selection of early issues - Large Queens (½c x 2, 15c) and Small Queens (½c, 1c, 2c, 3c, 5c x 2, 6c x 2, 8c, 20c and 50c), a short set of the Jubilees (½c to 50c), Maple Leaf complete basic sets of Maple Leaf and Numerals and most Edwards (missing only the 20c and 50c). From Admirals onwards, there is a good representation of basic issues, including some coils, mostly fine and previously hinged. We noted Scott #126a and 128a (in imperforate-horizontal pairs) and a very good representation of back of the book including air mails, air mail special delivery, postage due, special delivery, registration, war tax, and a solid representation of 4-hole OHMS perfins. A very clean collection, it has been catalogued as mint, fine for basic issues and back of the book to 1950 (Unitrade $10,730) plus approximately $200 in face value from 1950-1991. We did not check for papers, shades or varieties. There is also an owner-identified block of four of the 1992 "Canada in Space" issue with two space shuttle holograms showing higher orbit than usual as well as a 2008 Unitrade Specialized catalogue. Rounding out this collection is a 1993 Canada Post Annual Collection, along with a few souvenir sheets, booklets, blocks of four and loose stamps with total face value of over $210 (42c to $5 denominations) and empty Lighthouse Hingeless supplements for 1992 through 1996. See the photos for a good overview of the contents. (Image)

image Collection of Canada Mint and Used in Four Lighthouse Albums, 1859 to 2006, with stamps mounted in clear or black mounts. The collection begins with a one-page tribute to the world's first stamp - a good used GB Penny Black (K-A with red Maltese cross postmark) then continues with some back of the book (air mail, special delivery, war tax, postage due International Reply Coupons), followed by Cents (x5) Large Queens (x10), Small Queens (x10), Jubilees (½c to 50c) and full Leafs, Numerals, Edwards and Québecs. All early issues are used, some with heavy postmarks and some with faults. It is then about half full from Admirals through the mid 1940s with more used than mint, though there is a fine mint hinged Bluenose. There is a high degree of completion and mostly mint with many being never hinged from the mid 1940s onwards, including duplication of some album pages and homemade pages that contain matched sets of plate blocks or additional souvenir sheets and some FDCs and commemorative event covers. Face value after 1950 is $755 for denominations of 20c and over only. The collection is very neat and clean, though we note a bit of water damage on the edges of some pages in one album, which includes items from 2003, noted for the record; only a few FDCs were affected by the moisture. An excellent starter collection or to fill gaps in an existing one, also good catalogue value for dealers or resellers. See photos for an overview of the earlier material. (Image)

Some of the earlier issues are faulty, though we noted many clear c.d.s. and some RPO postmarks on Jubilees, Leafs, Numerals and Admirals, though not checked carefully by us. We note a double-side black stock sheet of the 29c 1986 Christmas stamp with a good number of the better perforation ($3 each used), some CNR and other private perfins and war tax stamps. The lot is rounded out by three Canadian Wildlife Conservation stamps used on permit, a file folder of federal revenues including bill stamps, excise, customs duty, etc. and about 50 Newfoundland stamps. Cat No: Collection

image Collection of Mint and Used Canada and BNA, 1880 to 2003, in five thick stockbooks and a few black stock pages, from the personal collection of retired Canada Post designer Bernard J. Reilander. One stockbook begins with several pages of mint and used BNA including New Brunswick (x5), Nova Scotia (x4), PEI, (x3) and Newfoundland (over 120). Canada used begins with a #15, followed by a 5c Large Queen, and then lower-denomination examples of Small Queens, Jubilees, Map, Quebec Tercentenary, then continuing through the early 1970s. The stockbooks finish off with a couple of pages of federal revenues including postal scrip, customs duty, excise, cigarette and Ontario Law. We noted some c.d.s. cancels and a couple of precancels as well. The remainder of the stockbooks are a combination of mint and used. We carefully counted only the mint face value postage in denominations of 15c and over in loose stamps, plate blocks, souvenir sheets (more than 100), full and part-sheets, some booklets and other multiples, plus early Canada Post semi-annual packs (1974 and 1975, total of 16 packs) and 20 pre-packaged plate blocks from 1974-1976 issues. Total face of the mint stamps is over $1,480, over $1,000 of which is in denominations of 30c to $5.00 (see inventory in online photos). Also included is a box (5 lb, 2.3kg) of used mostly sorted by issue into envelopes and glassines; we observed many town cancels from the 1950s and 60s. Great lot for a collector, dealer or postage reseller alike. See our online photos for an overview. (Image)

image Collection of Mint and Used, 1880 to 1992, in one Minkus album, a binder and two full stockbooks. The album has good representation of most issues, mostly used or mint hinged, from 1880 to the late 1970s along with a few Newfoundland. The binder starts with six pages of used Small Queens (at least 450 stamps) with town postmarks, squared circles, duplex and some fancy cancels in many shades - many with faults but still helpful to the student of the issue. It continues with many hundreds more used Jubilees, Leafs, Numerals, Admirals and some back of the book, on through the early 1950s. The stockbooks are filled mostly with plate blocks, blocks and multiples from Small Queens through the early 1980s. Loose postage is divided by denomination into glassines. Mint postage totals $520 in denominations of 15c and over, including souvenir sheets, inscription blocks, a few full sheets (notably the 1977 Silver Jubilee, 25c x 50 stamps) and a 1984 Canada Post Annual Collection.
