MARIE, dated MAR 2, paid and 10 in circle to Utica NY. Before a post office was opened in Sault Ste Marie CW (November 1846) much mail was sent to and from the settlement through the more accessible US town of Saut Ste. Marie Michigan. In addition, mailed from Michipicoten CW and the Red River Settlement was put into the mail stream there. See the De Volpi fur trade collection. This contemporary envelope entered the post in SSM Michigan, but its origin is unknown, very fine. (Image)
