image POSTAL HISTORY: 1862 Stampless Registered Transatlantic folded cover, uncommon red TORONTO C.W PAID 25 SEP 1862 large [26mm – large capitals] single split circle, [PHSC 11121-200], plus REGISTERED h/s and PAID h/s in red, with 1/- m/s rate in red [Likely 6d packet rate plus 6d registration fee. [see Montgomery A3-9]. Rates in currency continued into the decimal period, possible registration fee was paid separately, with 1/- paid for double 6d rate. To The Manager of the, Bank of Scotland, Glasgow, Scotland. Endorsed: “Per Canadian Mail Steamer” & “Registered”. GLASGOW PACKET, COL PAID, OC 9, 1862 receiver on front. Likely carried on Allen Line “Bohemia”, Dep Quebec 27 Sep, Scottish mail taken off at Moville/Londonderry on 7/8th Oct, Arr Liverpool 8 Oct. Note manuscript “6/6 underlined” and crossed out on front, manuscript “15” on back. Seal cut away. (Image)

Light strike of double circle YORK UC 31 Dec 1829 in red. Light unreadable NIAGARA UC double circle. Red m/s 25 [cents] and confirmation red buckle NIAGARA U CANADA PAID TO NEW YORK. Agent crossed out details and endorsed letter “Per York via L’pool”. Boxed SHIP LETTER LIVERPOOL on back. Rated 1/8 stg due [8d Ship Letter plus 1/- inland postage from Liverpool to Bridport]. Cross-written 3 ways letter from J G Brown to his wife, endorsed “10th Feby”, Panel cut out, possibly before letter was written, red seal, toning and minor tear. (Image)

Internally dated 36 Finsbury Circus, London, 18th Jany 1837, magnificent Crown oval PAID SHIP LETTER LONDON 18 JA 18 1837 h/s in red on front. Rated 1/1 m/s in red on front. Endorsed “Via New York”, and “via Liverpool” in second hand. NEW YORK SHIP MAR 3 full circle in red on front. Rated 27 (cents ship letter fee of 2¢ plus 25¢ overland to border at Lewiston) m/s in red on front, converted to1/4½ d cy m/s plus 4½ d cy (BNA postage under 60 miles across Lake Ontario) m/s, total 1/9 d, m/s on front. From 28th Feb 1837 Ferriage no longer charged. Weak mirrored QUEENSTON double ring h/s border exchange on back. From John Rankin to The Revd. Mark Stark, Ancaster, Toronto, Upper Canada. Short letter “..my sister desiring me to say that she is giving you £50 as a new year gift as you have a bank now, draw on B & Rankin..”. Also, ref “they sailed for Barbados on 23rd Decr from the Downs & must be near the island”. John Rankin’s will [d1845] is on UCL Legacies of British Slave-ownership database, mentions Beckford & Rankin & West Indian trade. Mark Young Stark was a Presbyterian minister, ordained 1833, served Ancaster & Dundas, involved in founding Knox College, Toronto in 1844. Usual tear at seal. (Image)
