June 4" with illustrated advertisement on reverse for "Cumberland Mills" clearly showing an 1873 year of use, addressed to Mystic River, CT, extraneous doodling on both sides and light edge staining, Very Fine, the unique example of this enigmatic card which has not been on the market since 1986 when it realized a mere $210, 1986 Philatelic Foundation certificaternIn Postal Stationery 356 (Sept-Oct 2007), Bill Falberg proposed the following wording for the catalogue listing for this curious card: "There are no official records of any authorized use of unwatermarked paper during May, 1873, when the large watermarked card was being produced. However, the existence of an unwatermarked card postmarked June 4, 1873 means that it is likely that some of the unwatermarked normal color proofs produced in early April, prior to the paper being calendered for the large watermark dandy roll, were accidentally distributed into postal channels and used much like the Full Face McKinley cards would be 29 years later.-+ (Image)
