25¢ maximum “C” country ½ ounce airmail rate, on cover dated NOV12-1954 and addressed to intercept passenger Colonel Louis Keene on the Union Castle Line SS WARWICK CASTLE during it's stopover at Biera-Mozambique, the normal “B”
country rate to East Africa was 15¢ per ½ ounce but the sender had no way to determine if the letter would arrive before the ship departed for Asia (a “C” country rate), the letter did mis the ship at Biera where Colonel Keen had also
changed ships, redirected to the Union Castle Line SS DURBAN CASTLE at Mombasa-Kenya but again missed the connection, the cover was then returned to sender for better direction, a great East Africa routing and unusual rate, VF est ($75+ US) (Image) |
