Full margins to touched at left, completely sound, tied by partly clear strike of Tudor Hall Va. circular datestamp on red and blue on yellow Jefferson Davis Medallion, 11-Star Flags and Sunburst Patriotic cover (JD-2) to Talladega Ala., slightly reduced at left but design is complete, small repair at top not affecting stamp or design

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC DESIGN WITHOUT THE ALLEGORICAL BACKGROUND SCENE, AND FRANKED WITH THE 5-CENT GREEN JEFFERSON DAVIS GENERAL ISSUE.

This design is one of the rarest of the Jefferson Davis Medallion Patriotics. It has 11 stars in both the flags and the sunburst above "Confederate States of America." It omits the bridge, cannon, train, steamboat and cotton bale allegorical scene below the medallion, which is found on most of the other Davis designs. The combination of the Davis Patriotic design with the Davis First General Issue stamp is quite striking.

"Our Homes" Confederate Patriotic Design. Unused cover with red, blue and black "Our Homes" and "Protection" Pictorial Confederate Patriotic design (MS-3), remarkable detailed allegorical scene of Confederate soldier defending family and country at top with 11-Star Flag and full horn of plenty, and Northerner at bottom with broken bust of Abraham Lincoln, "taxation" and slave with U.S. flag and empty horn of plenty, fresh with only very minor small toned specks at right

VERY FINE. ONE OF ONLY A HANDFUL OF EXAMPLES -- EITHER USED OR UNUSED -- OF THIS FASCINATING AND ELABORATELY DESIGNED PICTORIAL PATRIOTIC COVER.

Among Confederate Patriotic cover designs, the two which stand out most prominently, due to their exceptional imagery and messages, are the "Hanging Lincoln" design and this "Our Homes" design. There are only two recorded used examples of this design, which are ex Dr. Brandon (Sale 1087, lot 109) and ex Kilbourne (Sale 1186, lot 557). This is one of probably fewer than five unused examples. At least two of the other unused covers show more significant toning.

VERY FINE. THIS VERSION OF THE BASIC CONFEDERATE 7-STAR FLAG DESIGN WITH "C.S.A." IS CONSIDERABLY RARER THAN OTHER VARIETIES.

The few examples of this rare "C.S.A." flag design we were able to locate were used from Virginia post offices. The last we offered was a handstamped "Paid" use from the same correspondence as the cover offered here (ex Dr. Brandon).

5c Blue, Local (7). Horizontal pair, ample margins, tied by "Savannah Ga. Paid Apr. 21" (1863) circular datestamp on red and blue 9-Star Confederate Flag and "Head Quarters, Chatham Artillery" Patriotic cover (F9-2A) to Robertville S.C., accompanied by 9-Star Confederate Flag lettersheet with the same unit designation (F9-2B, with larger stars) and manuscript "Camp Ashby", the lettersheet is dated Oct. 5, 1862 so comes from a different cover (but same correspondence)

FRESH AND EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL 9-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG COVER AND LETTERSHEET MATCHED PAIR -- SHOWING BOTH STYLES OF THE F9-2 STAR SIZES.

The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag designs (7 thru 13 stars). Surviving examples are rare, and we believe the lettersheets are even rarer than the covers.
