COMMENTS: Beginning with the 1877 mintage, Chief Engraver William Barber modified the Double Eagle design, most significantly by spelling out the TWENTY DOLLARS” denomination. The 1877-CCs were struck at a slower rate than the 1874, 1875 and 1876 mintages. The 1877 has a lower survival rate, and most are in Circulated mid grades. (Image) (image2)
