VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE STRIP OF THREE OF THE 5-CENT NEW YORK POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL.
While pairs of the New York Postmaster’s Provisional were commonly used to pay the double or over-300 miles rate, any multiple of three or larger is extremely rare.

VERY FINE. A VERY ATTRACTIVE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE NEW YORK POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL STAMP USED ON INBOUND MAIL FROM BOSTON.
New York Postmaster Robert H. Morris arranged to distribute stamps to some cities outside of New York and instructed the postmasters to treat the letters as unpaid at origin, but New York would accept them as prepaid on arrival. This cover originated in Boston, and the stamp has the unusual initials configuration with the letters ACM” almost completely separated (without periods), except the C” and M” are faintly attached.

FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED OFF-COVER STRIPS OF THREE OF THE 10-CENT ST. LOUIS POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL ON GRAY LILAC PAPER. A MAGNIFICENT SHOWPIECE.
The St. Louis Bears” were issued by Postmaster John M. Wimer from November 1845 until the first United States General Issue became available in July 1847. The stamps were issued in three denominations -- 5c, 10c and 20c -- and were sold at a premium over face value to pay the costs of printing. All of the stamps were printed from a single copper plate of six subjects (2 x 3) engraved by J. M. Kershaw. The plate underwent two significant modifications. Philatelists identify each state of the plate as Plates 1, 2 and 3, but in fact the same piece of metal was used in each state. The different states of the plate reflect the substitution of two of the three 5c denominations in the left column for 20c denominations, and back again to three 5c. The right column, as demonstrated by this strip, was never altered and remained as 10c denominations throughout the life of the plate. Each engraving of the 10c design differs slightly, particularly in the lines underneath Post Office” at bottom, which aids in identifying positions. This strip beautifully demonstrates the subtle differences in each position.
Ex Faiman and from our 1965 and 1979 Rarities of the World sales. With 1965 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail $52,500.00.

A REMARKABLE CORNER SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE RARE ST. LOUIS BEARS”
10-CENT PROVISIONAL ON PELURE PAPER.
A survey of our Levi records and auction catalogues produced a tally of approximately 35 examples of the 10c Pelure off and on cover. The vast majority of these stamps have faults or margins cutting into the design. The stamp offered here is extraordinary as a full corner sheet-margin example, and its appearance could be vastly improved with some skillful restoration of the defect at bottom.
Ex Pope and Wagshal. With 1962 and 2010 P.F. certificates. Scott Retail $15,000.00, but footnote states: Values of Nos. 11X7-11X8a, on and off cover, reflect the usual poor condition of these stamps, which were printed on fragile pelure paper. Attractive examples with minor defects sell fo considerably more.” (Image)
