1348   Image$200.00 Red, Blue & Black, Second Issue, "Small Persian Rug" (R132). Bright colors, choice centering with perfs clear of design all around, neat purple July 2, 1872 manuscript cancel, light vertical crease

VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL STAMPS IN UNITED STATES PHILATELY.

Both the Small and Large "Persian Rug" stamps were printed in sheets of one. Because of their size, the large number of perforations on each stamp, and the fact that they were used on documents which were frequently folded across the stamps, most examples have faults to varying degrees. This is a very attractive example and one of only 446 issued.

With 1982 P.F. certificate (Image)

1349   Image$500.00 Red Orange, Green & Black, Second Issue, "Large Persian Rug" (R133). Well-centered with wide margins, unobtrusive strikes of black circular datestamp cut cancels at top and bottom leave the full intricate design completely visible, light horizontal crease at top

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE CELEBRATED $500.00 "LARGE PERSIAN RUG" WITH A FACE-FREE CANCEL. ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL AND ELABORATELY ENGRAVED STAMPS IN ALL OF PHILATELY.

Only 210 were issued, and it is safe to say that most examples are faulty to some degree. In addition, manuscript cancels almost always touch or obscure part of the central Washington medallion. A review of our online census records will attest to the extreme rarity of this stamp with a face-free cancel.

A document exists from July 24, 1874, detailing the purchaser of each. The Kingsley census records 76 copies, and our expanded census, available at our website at https://siegelauctions.com/display_census.php?id=16 , contains 87.

Kingsley Census No. 28-4. From our 1986 Rarities of the World sale where acquired by the current owner. Scott Retail is for a "very fine appearing example with a light circular cut cancel or with minor flaws" (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE SCARCE $5.00 PROPRIETARY ON VIOLET PAPER.

Examples of the $5.00 Proprietary Issue almost invariably have faults, due to the stamp's large size and the nature of its use. This example is better than most. The Kingsley book contains a table showing 2,109 stamps ordered and he records only 119 copies extant (Image)
