1549° og Image8c Olive Green, Bluish (363). Choice centering with wide margins, intense color on deeply blued paper

VERY FINE AND CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 8-CENT WASHINGTON ON BLUISH PAPER. RARE IN SUCH WONDERFUL CONDITION.

According to Johl (Vol. 1, page 175), the only source of the 4c and 8c Bluish stamps was the archives of the Post Office Department. Approximately 80 of each were traded for rare stamps missing from the archives. Our Levi records show perhaps three Mint N.H. examples, all of which are off center.

Ex "Scarsdale". With 1969 and 1999 P.F. and 2004 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85; SMQ $34,300.00). Only one has graded higher (graded 95) and only one other shares this grade. (Image)

1550° nh Image15c Pale Ultramarine, Bluish (366). Mint N.H., brilliant color on nicely blued paper, unusually choice centering with well-balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT ON BLUISH PAPER, WHICH IS GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION.

The 4c and 8c stamps are correctly recognized as the rarest of the Bluish Paper issue, but they were never sold over the post office counter and used by the public. Of the values that were regularly issued, the 5c is the rarest, followed by the 13c, and then by the 15c, 10c, 6c and 3c (the 1c and 2c are common). If Mint Never-Hinged stamps are isolated from the supply available to collectors, the rarity factors increase significantly for all of the values.

With 1986, 1996, 2003 and 2006 P.F. certificates (XF-Superb 95). By way of comparison, the highest grade awarded by P.S.E. is 90 (four copies). (Image)
