VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A LOVELY OFF-COVER EXAMPLE OF THE BATON ROUGE POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL WITH CRISS-CROSS BORDER.
FINE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE BATON ROUGE 5-CENT CRISS-CROSS BORDER STAMP WITH McCCRMICK” ERROR. OFFERED TO THE MARKET FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE 1989 WEILL BROTHERS' SALE. A GREAT RARITY OF CONFEDERATE POSTMASTERS’ PROVISIONALS.
The McCcrmick” error is found on the 2c and both 5c Baton Rouge stamps (none of the three recorded examples of the 10c stamp contain the error). The 2c error is very rare with only three known. The 5c Maltese Cross border error is the most common, though still rare. This 5c Criss-Cross border error is the only recorded example. Despite the relative supply, Scott Retail for this unique error is only one-sixth that of the price for the 2c error (perhaps because this has been off the market for so long).

FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY ELEVEN COVERS WITH THE BATON ROUGE 5-CENT CRISS-CROSS BORDER STAMP ARE RECORDED.
Both the Crown survey and the Calhoun census record only 11 covers with criss-cross border stamps, all single frankings. No covers are known with the "McCcrmick" error (see lot 3048 in this sale for the only recorded off-cover 11X3 "McCcrmick" error). Only two covers have four-margin stamps and almost all covers have minor faults or flaps removed.
