Nine covers with stamps and 14 stampless, four of No. 61L2 including one that does not originate (P.F. certificate), other three tied by pen, part of wax wafer and file fold -- each of these appears to originate, No. 61L3-61L4 with five on covers (four of 61L3), these are difficult to determine if they originated and so counted as off-cover, stampless covers with Eagle City or Stait's red handstamp, a couple different styles, mixed condition with flaws to be expected, overall Fine appearing group (Image)

Essex Letter Express, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Red Glazed (65L1). Small margins with framelines showing on four sides, uncancelled, affixed to small cover to Jamaica Plains Mass., "New-York 5 Cts. May 2" integral-rate circular datestamp (ca. 1856), cover creased at top, stamp has slight crease and tiny tear at top, Fine-appearing example of this rare stamp, which may or may not have originated on the cover; the Patton book illustrates this cover (p. 173) and reprints Coster's story of the Essex Letter Express, which is basically that three or four ex-carriers of various city posts joined together in 1856 and issued the Essex Letter Express stamps to the public, then disbanded and kept the proceeds -- signed Colson, ex Caspary, Middendorf, Golden and Geisler, Scott Retail $1,250.00 as an off-cover stamp (Image)
