Pomeroy's & Co's. Express. Two stampless covers, first perfect clear strike of red "Forwarded by Pomeroy & Co's. Express, From Buffalo." handstamp, blue manuscript "By Pomeroy & Cos Express" and "Paid" on June 28, 1842 folded letter to Albany, file folds including one with small split and other slight toning which touches the handstamp at left, otherwise Extremely Fine strike, the earliest recorded example of this Pomeroy Buffalo handstamp, second cover with clear strike of red rimless "Pomeroy & Co. Two strips of three rejoined to form the original block of six, Positions 5-7 and 9-11 on the plate of 40, large margins to full at left, bright color, few flaws including bottom strip with horizontal crease which causes a couple small paper breaks, top left stamp tiny thin spot

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A SPECTACULAR RARITY OF INDEPENDENT MAILS AND CLASSIC UNITED STATES PHILATELY. THIS RECONSTRUCTED BLOCK OF SIX CONTAINS THE LARGEST RECORDED UNUSED MULTIPLES OF THE POMEROY'S LETTER EXPRESS 1844 5-CENT BLACK ON GREENISH YELLOW.

In all of our auctions dating back to 1993 and Rarities sales since 1964, we have not offered even a single unused example of the Pomeroy 5c on Yellow surface colored paper (117L1). Unlike the common unused stamps on thick wove and thin bond, which are remainders, there were no supplies of this first issue left to collectors. As a personal note (SRT), for 20 years we searched in vain for the whereabouts of this multiple. We had no idea it was on the original George B. Sloane reference collection page in Gordon Stimmell's possession.

Horizontal pair, large to huge margins, left stamp creased by file fold, manuscript cancels on Jul. 27, 1844 folded letter from Lockport N.Y. to Boston, conjunctive use with red "Forwarded by Hale & Co. Albany" handstamp, some slight waterstaining around left stamp

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION OF A PAIR OF POMEROY STAMPS AND CONJUNCTIVE USE WITH HALE & COMPANY FOR SERVICE BETWEEN ALBANY AND BOSTON.

This letter was carried by Pomeroy from Lockport to Albany, then by Hale & Co. to Boston. The stamps paid the Pomeroy 5c and Hale 5c rates. Any on-cover use of a pair of a Pomeroy stamp is rare. We record six pairs of Pomeroy's Blue stamp on covers. A very similar cover to this one realized $4,000 hammer in our 1999 sale of the Golden collection (Image)

Important Collection of Pomeroy's Letter Express. The Sloane collection with additions and notes by Gordon Stimmell, mounted or housed in a single album, wide range of stamp material and research with articles, reprints of notes and letters, etc., begins with photographs of George Eltweed Pomeroy and Henry Wells, a few large-format square "Pomeroy & Cos. Express" labels depicting locomotive, a fabricated "large die proof" (cut to shape stamp), then a wide array of stamps with originals and reprints on range of papers with surface-colored, thick wove, thin bond and some on the scarce pelure, complete sheets of Black on bond, numerous copies of Blue on bond, a margin strip of three of Blue on pelure paper (rare), partial platings, numerous remainder sheets in different colors on medium fibrous paper, also three covers including Nos. 117L1 (on part of cover) and 117L4, a fascinating collection worth careful review
