Brainard & Co., (5c) Blue (24L2). Large to huge square margins all around, manuscript "B" initial (Albany), used on Feb. 8, 1845 folded letter to 49 Wall Street in New York City, file fold creases stamp which also has a tiny edge nick at top far from the design

VERY FINE. ONE OF FOURTEEN RECORDED COVERS BELIEVED TO BE GENUINE USES OF THE BRAINARD & CO. 5-CENT BLUE STAMP.

The Lyons census (The Penny Post, January 2006) reports sixteen covers with the Blue 24L2 stamp, but states that no more than fourteen of these are genuine uses. A cover from the same correspondence, sent the same date from Albany but to 36 Wall Street, was part of the Golden and Kuphal collections (Siegel Sale 925, lot 1020, realized $4,000 hammer) (Image)

Brainard & Co., New York-Albany-Troy, 5c Black, 5c Blue (24L1-24L2). Three covers, each with single stamp cut to shape, first two with Black and Blue respectively, both genuinely used on 1844 north and southbound folded covers, Black stamp uncancelled and used to to Burlington Vt. from Albany, Blue stamp pen-cancelled and used to New York City, file folds including one thru Blue stamp which also has gum staining, Fine appearance and very scarce, includes a third cover with 5c Blue, pen cancel and "B" initial (Albany), we believe it has been added to a cover to Elizabethtown N.J with red New York Post Office circular datestamp, stamp is Fine, an argument could be made that it was sent down from Albany by Brainard and posted by them in New York for carriage to New Jersey but that is a stretch, counted as an off-cover stamp which is still scarce, Scott Retail for cut-to-shape untied stamps on two covers and one off-cover $6,900.00 (Image)

Forwarded by Davenport & Co. 29-1/2 State Street, Boston. Dark red oval handstamp with matching "Paid" straightline, pencil manuscript "2" rate (local delivery charge) and "Paid" on Jun. 16, 1845 folded letter from Bridgewater Mass. to New York City, conjunctive use with partly clear strike of red "City Mail Office, Broad Street" oval handstamp, edge soiling, still Very Fine and scarce, Perry believed Davenport & Co.'s express started in the spring of 1845 and was forced to discontinue soon after on June 30 by the Act of 1845, Hahn lists five examples (Image)
