The Robert R. Hall Collection of Outstanding United States Stamps continued...

1890-93 Issue (Scott 219-229) continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
394 ogbl Image30c Black (228). Bottom imprint and plate no. 24 block of twelve, natural s.e. with part arrow at right, side four stamps Mint N.H., detailed impression

FINE-VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE PLATE BLOCK OF THE 30-CENT 1890 ISSUE. THIS IS THE FIRST INTACT PLATE BLOCK WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS.

The beautiful Black Jefferson design was the last 30c U.S. definitive to be issued during the 19th Century (the Jefferson design was changed to 50c in 1894). Large multiples are surprisingly scarce. Power Search located a plate block of twelve, most recently offered in our Curtis sale, but the top row in that block has been separated and rejoined.

With 1990 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as plate block of ten (the only listed size for a plate block) and two singles. (Image)

FINE-VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE LIGHTLY-HINGED PLATE BLOCK OF THE 90-CENT 1890 ISSUE.

Plate 25 was the only plate used to print the 90c 1890 Issue, and plate blocks of this high value are exceedingly rare. Apart from the bottom position plate block in our recent Curtis sale, one has to go back to 2003 to find another in one of our auctions. (Image)
