VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE ONE-CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE.
The Scott Retail value of $60,000.00 is based on an allocation of price from the sale of a nearly complete set of blocks in our Whitman sale (Sale 968) and is not supported by other sale results. We believe our estimate more closely reflects market value. (Image)
FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED BLOCKS OF THE 2-CENT "BLACK JACK" RE-ISSUE
The 2c Re-Issue was printed from a new plate of 100 subjects, compared to the original plate of 200 in two panes. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). Only 979 of the 2c were sold; the remaining 9,021 were destroyed on July 16, 1884. The 2c plate can be easily identified by a spot on the cheek.
The other recorded block is part of the famous Caspary set of 1861 Re-Issue blocks and is, for all practical purposes, unavailable to collectors as an individual block.
With 1972 P.F. certificate. (Image)
