EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A GORGEOUS USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 7-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE, WITH WIDE MARGINS, RADIANT COLOR AND A VERY CLEAR GRILL. A REAL CONDITION RARITY.

This denomination was issued almost a year after the others in the series. It was primarily used to pay the rate via Prussian Closed Mail to Germany and Austria (via England), which was reduced from 10c to 7c on October 1, 1871, and later to pay the 7c rate to Denmark, Hungary and Luxembourg.

37   Image10c Brown, H. Grill (139). Some grill points clearly visible at top of Jefferson's head, deep rich color and proof-like impression, unusually choice centering with Jumbo margins, bold strike of quartered cork cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A PHENOMENAL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 10-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE. THIS MAGNIFICENT STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 JUMBO BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT ISSUE TO OBTAIN IN SUCH SUPERB CONDITION.

This issue is normally found with small margins and very few visible grill points. The margins on the example offered here are exceptionally wide, the perfs are long and full all around, it has wonderful color, and a clear cancel. It is without question one of the finest in existence.

With 1996 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo, SMQ $4,150.00 as 95, $11,500.00 as 98). Only one has graded higher to date (at 98) and this is the only example to achieve this grade. (Image)

38   Image12c Dull Violet, H. Grill (140). Attractive pale shade which is a characteristic of genuine National Grilled issue stamps, unusually wide margins, neat strikes of Star in Circle New York Foreign Mail cancel and also with part of red transit cancel at left

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 12-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE. AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT ISSUE TO OBTAIN WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS AND IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION.

For some reason, the 12c National Bank Note Co. Grilled Issue is an exceedingly difficult stamp to obtain with wide margins. The 12c is one of the most difficult of all of the grilled issues to obtain in higher grades. A Power Search review of our sale records failed to find its equal.

"MBC" backstamp. With 2001 P.F. and P.S.E. certificates. (Image)

40   Image24c Purple, H. Grill (142). Fresh color for this stamp, beautifully centered with extra wide margin at right (possibly from end of the row), perfectly struck blue quartered cork cancel attractively frames General Scott's face

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 24-CENT NATIONAL GRILLED ISSUE. VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE BEAUTIFUL BLUE CANCEL.

The 24c National Bank Note Grilled Issue is not known unused. Brookman estimates that only 2,000 were issued.

Ex Golin and offered to the market for the first time since 1999. With 1992 P.S.E and 1995 P.F. certificates (Image)

41   Image30c Black, H. Grill (143). Six or seven vertical rows of grill points are clearly visible, intense shade and detailed impression on bright paper, unusually wide and balanced margins, unobtrusive cork cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 30-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST USED EXAMPLE OF THIS ISSUE WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. A PHENOMENAL STAMP IN TERMS OF MARGIN SIZE, CENTERING, SHADE, IMPRESSION, UNOBTRUSIVENESS OF CANCEL AND OVERALL EYE APPEAL.

The 30c National Bank Note Co. grilled issue is normally seen with small margins, or is off-center. If one sees a centered copy, it more often than not turns out to have a small flaw. The stamp offered here is truly the exception to the rule.

Ex Sheriff and Zoellner, and offered to the market for the first time since 1998. With 1982 and 1998 P.F. certificates. (Image)

42   Image90c Carmine, H. Grill (144). Two horizontal rows of clear grill points, cork cancel and also part of red cancel leaves most of design clearly visible, choice centering with Jumbo margins, deep rich color on bright paper

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A HUGE EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 90-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE GRILLED ISSUE. AN EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND IN THIS SUPERB CONDITION -- THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.

For no apparent reason, examples of this issue with wide margins tend to have small flaws. We have encountered less than a dozen copies which are sound and also have wide margins. The example offered here is easily one of the finest.

With 1999 P.F. certificate. (Image)
