Stampless 1787 folded letter from Lisbon 12 Jan to London England with m/s "p. Revolutionaire NW", rated 1/3. On reverse has horseshoe "FALMOUTH / SHIP / LRE" h/s overstruck. Fascinating lengthy contents inside (in English) regarding a proposal to send a cargo of saltpeter to India. The letter mentions that... "we are just informed by Armed Lugger" that a fleet had appeared in Bantry Bay (a reference to the aborted French Invasion of Ireland Dec 1796 during the French Revolutionary Wars). Red wax seal on reverse. A copy of the letter has been written out by the previous owner. A nice historical item. F, some soiling (Image)
