Russian Offices, 1902 (Mar. 3), Cover from Chefoo to New York, NY, franked by ten 1k orange Coats-of-Arms (strip of five, pair, 3 singles), all tied by light Cyrillic Chefoo 3 III 1902 postmarks; reverse shows the cover's progress through Shanghai (Chinese cancel, Mar. 10, and Cyrillic 11 III), Nagasaki (Mar. 14), and Yokohama (Mar. 16), arriving New York Apr. 9; small stain in address panel, small part of backflap missing, but otherwise sound for its age, Fine to Very Fine. US Offices, 1863 (Dec. ?), Underpaid Multicolor Franking Cover to Shanghai, China, orange envelope with attractive franking of 30¢ orange, horizontal pair 10¢ green and 2¢ black (#71, 68, 73), all tied by oval grid cancels; cover endorsed "Via Marseilles", with red manuscript "32" credit and marking and matching London DE 26 Paid datestamp; reverse bears red "New York Am. Pkt." datestamp (date illegible), Hong Kong "C" receiver in blue dated FE 17 64, plus a further illegible handstamp at left; missing part of backflap; underpaid by 1¢ (the going rate of 53¢), the New York Exchange Office obviously ignoring the discrepancy and accepting it as fully paid, Very Fine, signed Ashbrook with part of letter from him. Geist, a sailor aboard the Oahu on Yangtze River Patrol while en route to Kiukiang from Anhing; the personal correspondence describes the river and the gorges, explains haulage over the rapids, and details a skirmish with Communist bandits; no breaks along folds, though the handwriting take a bit of getting used to, Very Fine, an interesting first-hand report.
