1222 imageGerman Offices, 1898 (Oct.), Official letter sent via American Mail to Swatow, an intriguing glimpse into the intersection of war and philately; the letter, from the commander of the cruiser SMS Arcona to the German Consulate in Swatow, had been written in Manila, Philippines, which American forces had recently taken control of in the Spanish-American War; the letter was submitted to US Military Postal Authorities in Manila, as evidenced by the (un-overprinted) US stamps and the red double-ring "Mil. Sta. No. 1, Philippine Isls, San Francisco, Cal./Registered" handstamp at center; purple Manila Registry handstamp at left, British Swatow receiver (Nov. 2) above; reverse with Hong-Kong transit of Oct. 30, and German Naval handstamp across backflap; central vertical file fold noted strictly for accuracy, a rare item worthy of exhibit, ex Chazen.
