1154 cover image1883 (Feb. 12) part newspaper wrapper from Shanghai to the Commissioner of Customs, Ichang, showing on reverse "Shanghai/Local Post/2" small double-ring origin datestamp in blue on reverse, and on front the rare "Hankow Customs/Mail Matter" large unframed oval handstamp (type I) with serifed letters in red and matching "Customs/Hankow" double-ring datestamp (2.19), top left portion of the wrapper with addressee's name has been torn away, unusual and interesting usage demonstrating the workings of the Shanghai Local Post system and its cooperation with the Customs Post, Fine to Very Fine strikes.

A very early example of the elusive Hankow Customs Mail Matter type I handstamp, of which we record five covers and the above wrapper, used between February 17 and April 13, 1883.

1155 O imageca. 1893, 50¢ violet on yellow Hankow Dog, Unissued, clean print with centrally struck complete "Hankow/NO 28/98/Local Post" c.d.s. (year slug inverted); several creases but otherwise sound and fresh, Very Fine. An extraordinarily rare stamp. Of fewer than ten copies believed to exist, nearly all are mint. This is thought to be one of only two known postmarked examples, the other illustrated in Dougan (p. 125) with identical date. Favor-cancelled, as the Hankow Local Post closed in early 1897.
