1400 cover image1870 (July 29) envelope from Amoy to Brooklyn, New York, "Via Marseilles" bearing watermarked Crown CC 18c lilac pair (Scott 17. SG 13), canceled "B62" and additionally just tied by "London/Paid/A" c.d.s. in red, showing crisply struck "Amoy/A" origin and "Hong Kong/C" transit (7.31) c.d.s. on reverse, and on front "New York Paid All" c.d.s. in red with matching handstruck "2 cents", manuscript rating "1" (Colonial charge) and "1/5", Very Fine, and an exceptional usage of the rare watermarked Crown CC 18c in a mutiple on cover paying the 36-cent rate from a Treaty Port to the US via Marseille, from the famous Culbertson correspondence, ex Frankilin Delano Roosevelt, Admiral George C. Dyer, and Richard C.K. Chan,

The letter was carried on the P&O Steamer "Columbian" from Hong Kong (8.4) to Galle (8.21), then by the "Mongolia" between Galle (8.23) and Suez (9.9), where transferred to the "Ceylon" at Alexandria (9.10) for Marseille (9.16), then from France to England, with the last leg of the voyage being on Cunard Steamer "Batavia" (9.20) from Liverpool to New York (10.1).

1404 cover image1869 (Sept. 10), Cover sent to U.S.S. Monocacy in Hong Kong, 1869 cover addressed to "1st Asst. Engineer, E.J. Whitaker U.S.N., U. S. Steamer Monocacy, Care of Thos. Hunt & Co., Hong Kong, China", franked with a cork-canceled 10¢ green F. grill (Scott US #96) and postmarked with a light Sep 10 Sackets Harbor, N.Y. c.d.s. and a red "San Francisco, Paid All, Oct 3" exchange office c.d.s.; reduced slightly at the left, Fine to Very Fine. This cover would have been carried from San Francisco on the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's China, departing Oct. 4, 1869, and arriving at Hong Kong on Nov. 8.,

Monocacy served in the Asiatic Squadron from 1867 until 1903. During her time with the squadron she surveyed the Inland Sea between Nagasaki and Osaka to locate appropriate sites for lighthouses; she patrolled off the coast of Japan; she charted the Yangtze River and was part of a five-ship survey expedition of the Salee River in Korea. In 1900 she became involved in the Boxer Rebellion and captured seven small craft off Tongku, China. She was sold to Japan in 1903. (Image1) (Image2)
