The postage was based on the silver dollar value of the Gold Yuan. The exchange rate for May 1 was Gold Yuan $40,000 = $1 silver. This exchange rate existed for only three days. By May 1949, the Communist forces controlled more than half of the country, and the Gold currency was becoming relatively valueless.
