297 cover Chattanooga Type 1-3 imageChattanooga Straightline Union Army Provisional Field Cancel Types 1-3, balance of the Cate collection consisting of nine Type 1, six Type 2 and ten Type 3, Type 1 -- Dec. 13, Dec. 14 with two horizontal lines, Dec. 15, Dec. 18 with straightline "Due 3" (no stamp; only reported example of the straightline Due 3 with a field cancel), Dec. 19 with "Due 6" in circle, Dec. 20 with "Due 3" in circle (no stamp), Dec. 20, Dec. 21 with "Due 3" in circle (no stamp), Dec. 22 (last day), Type 2 -- Dec. 24 (2nd Day), Dec. 26 with "Due 3" in circle (no stamp), Dec. 27 (with period after "Tenn" absent), Dec. 28 (with "Pass" written across the top), Dec. 29 and Dec. 31 (last day) and Type 3 - Jan. 1 (first day), Jan. 3, Jan. 5, Jan. 7, Jan. 9, Jan. 11 with one inverted "1" in "11", Jan. 11 (normal), Jan. 12. Jan. 15 with "Due 3" in circle (no stamp), Jan. 17 (last day), and Jan. 17 with the USPOD issued canceling device that arrived during the day and was immediately placed into use (the finer of the two known), generally Fine to Very Fine strikes and covers, Type 1 cancellation was used from Dec. 9 to Dec. 22, 1863, and features "italics" style printing of the date and the "D" in "December" below the "N" in "Chattanooga". It is 44mm long without frame. Type 2 cancellation was used from Dec. 23 to Dec. 31, 1863, and features the "D" in "December" below the "HA" in "Chattanooga". It is without frame. Type 3 cancellation was used from Jan. 1 to Jan. 17, 1864 and is framed., ex-Cate (with his green "JCC" backstamp) and on his exhibit pages.
