1313 O U4 imageEnvelope, 1853, Nesbitt 1st Issue, 3¢ red on buff, "THREE" in short label with straight ends (Scott U4), entire, an appealing two-country franking, stated to be the earliest recorded use of a US entire to a foreign destination; the indicium weakly inked, cancelled by manuscript cross and straightline "PAID" handstamp; manuscript "2/" and red handstamped "3" ratings; addressed to Gainsborough, Lincolnshire and forwarded to London, the British domestic postage paid by 1d red brown on bluish paper (#3) tied by barred numeral cancel; with British red "PAID/AP/22OC22/1853" and blue Gainsborough broken-ring postmark (Oct. 23) on front, a second, same-day Gainsborough postmark on reverse; faults, including a horizontal crease through the Queen Victoria adhesive, but an important cover (and still oddly attractive), Fine. Only four examples of this cut square are recorded two on horizontally laid paper and two on vertically laid. There are no entire wrappers recorded.
