1933 U.S.S. Macon First Flight Cover, 3¢ Washington and 10¢ Lindbergh (#720 & C10) tied by "Akron Ohio Apr. 24, 1033" duplex cancels on air mail cover addressed to "Capt. W.R. Van Auken, Naval War College, Newport R.I." with various notes on back by the recipeint -- 1) "The sister airship "Akron" was lost 4 April 1933 - off New Jersey with Admiral Moffett N.S.W. - W.R.V" 2) the blue ink signature of "Alger H. Dresel, Commander U.S.N." with pencil note ("Cmdr. Airship "Macon" (He carried this on first flight W.R.V.") and 3) "Before Commissioning No March cancellation" at left edge, Extremely Fine, only four First Flight Covers of the U.S.S. Macon are known.

The U.S.S. Macon was commissioned into the U.S. Navy on June 23, 1933, with Commander Alger H. Dresel in command. (Image)

1934 (July 12), USS Macon Training Flight cover, franked by 10¢ Map and tied by Sunnyvale, Calif. duplex, with purple cachet of the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, across which is written (printed?) "First Flight with Commander Wiley"; this was the training flight during which the Macon located the ships Houston and New Orleans (the former carrying President Roosevelt on a secret trip to Hawaii); having found the ships, the Macon's Sparrowhawk planes dropped newspapers and magazines to the President, near Very Fine. Airship Macon Souvenir Cap, cloth and leather like garrison cap sold as a souvenir at the Akron Airport in the 1930s; it shows the USS Macon floating in the clouds with the words "Airship 'Macon'" undeneath; the image has a painted appearance but was probably printed in silver on black; the reverse, with some read material disturbing the image, shows the airship hanger at Akron; superfical tear at front of cap.
