1861, 5¢ orange brown, type II (Scott 30), rich color, light grid cancel, Fine, The 5c type II stamps in orange brown began appearing in early May 1861, just as the Civil War broke out. A few weeks later, in June 1861, U.S. postmaster-general Montgomery Blair ordered the severance of postal ties and the production of new stamps. The new 1c and 3c stamps began appearing in mid-August 1861 and the old stamps were demonitized six days later, and the new 5c issue first appeared on Jan. 2, 1862. Thus, given the very short period of time they were valid for postage, the 5c orange brown is very scarce in used condition., with 1981 P.F. certificate.

5¢ brown, type II/ Type I, Combination Block (Scott 30A), an outstanding right sheet margin block of 4 which has the bottom two stamps with projections, o.g., fresh and nicely centered with deep rich color and proof-like impression; just a tiny bit of separation between the upper right stamp and the selvage, bottom left stamp with a gummed-over thinned spot, still Fine to Very Fine, with 2022 P.F. certificate. An unlisted variety, the only one we have seen, and an extraordinary example of this rare multiple.

1857, 10¢ green, types I-IV, se-tenant in a single block of 10 (Scott 31-34), vertical block of 10, positions 54-55L/94-95L1: two type I, one type II, two type III and five type IV, including the only possible type IV block of 4, pen-canceled (and tied by a single pen stroke) on a large piece (front & back) of a folded letter from "San Jose, Cal., July 1" (manuscript postmark) to Rochester, N.Y. Per the accompanying certificate, "pos. 64 with crease [apparently, all but the top pair were folded over the top and onto the back of the cover], pos. 84 & 85 torn, and pos. 94 & 95 with staining at bottom". 1857, 10¢ green, types I-IV, all on a single cover to France (Scott 31-34), two vertical strips of 3: positions 74/94L (types IV-III-I, the left strip on the cover) and positions 75/95L (types II-III-I), tied by New Orleans c.d.s.s on an 1858 folded letter to Nantes, France with a red "New Paid York/18, Aug 28" exchange office c.d.s., a French entry c.d.s., a blue sender's oval and three different French backstamps; the type IV stamp—the top stamp in the left strip—has scissor-blunted top perforations and the top stamp in the other strip has some scissor-clipped perforations on the right; otherwise all stamps are quite well centered, both the stamps and the cover being Fine to Very Fine. A marvelous cover sent at three times the 15¢ rate.
