"This is the mail for which you sent postage", handstamp along with a "Return to Writer" pointing-hand handstamp, on four similar legal size covers franked with 1c Balboa type II overprints (38) tied by Cristobal machine cancels, Nov 28, 1913, and backstamped Culebra the same day; sent from the Society of the Charges in Cristobal to four different addressees in Culebra, where all were held until return postage was received, each then being franked with a second 1c type tied by a Dec 3 Culebra duplex handstamp and backstamped Cristobal the same day; each with a central vertical file fold, otherwise Very Fine. 1913, 1c green & black, type I & II overprints used to pay Postage Due (Scott 31, 38), the two tied by quartered cork cancels on a cover from Gatun to Cristobal, franked with a 1c type (38) tied by a Gatun duplex handstamp, Dec 13, 1913 and backstamped Cristobal the same day; handstamped "T" at Gatun, then, at cb, the 1c short payment was charged double and paid by the two 1c Balboas; the cover is a pre-printed return envelope to William F. Shipley, secretary-treasurer of the Society of the Charges, and has been rather crudely repaired at the lower right; nonetheless, an interesting use of regular issues to pay postage due prior to the issuance of the Canal Zone's first dues in March of 1914.

The Society of the Chagres was organized in the fall of 1911 and was made up of American employees of the Canal Company who had worked six years continuously on the canal. (Image) (Image2)

1924, Interim Period, transition from Panama stamps to USA stamps, All Panama stamps overprinted "Canal Zone" were withdrawn from sale on June 30, 1924 and no longer valid for postage after August 31, 1924, this collection consists of 39 covers, picture postcards and postal stationery mailed between July 1 and August 31 and 25 covers, picture postcards or postal stationery mailed after August 31, 1924, it begins with a picture postcard canceled June 30, 1924 (the last day the stamp was valid), then two July 1 postcards and two covers prepared by Nathan Levy with "Gatun July 1, 1924" the first day of the Interim Period duplex cancels -- one with 1¢ Panama and 1¢ US issues and one with 2¢ Panama and 2¢ US issues -- and includes a July 14, 1924 uprated postal card to Constantinople, Turkey (backstamped), also includes two legal sized (one patent) envelope with No. 68 tied by "Balboa Heights C.Z. Jul. 7" no-year-date covers with handstamped Panamanian government seal at top left (probably 1924 or 1925 but impossible to tell), rest are mostly 1924-25 with a few later (up to 1946) with a variety of frankings, some commercial uses, most to the US or Canal Zone or Panama, neatly arranged on stockcards, few faults as always but the vast majority are sound and very salable, Very Fine, see the entire collection online.
