1851, 1¢ blue, type I (Scott 5), position 7R1E, lovely example with near-complete ornaments; black Mobile, Ala postmark; small corner crease at top left, light horizontal crease at bottom, otherwise Very Fine, Siegel Census #5-CAN-037, ex Argentum, with 1950 P.F. and 2023 Crowe certificates.

The 1¢ 1851 Franklin, was the mainstay of postage use until 1861. Printed from 200-subject steel plates numbered 1 through 5 and 7 through 12, with the Plate 1 containing both Early & Late states. The first 4 plates were used soley for the imperforate issues. The elaborate and ornamental design surrounding Franklin on all four sides is what makes each type so distinctive. Stanley B. Ashbrook studied and later developed the system used to classify the design types and variations, based on the premise that Type I should be as complete an impression of the original die as possible. The completeness of the ornamentation at top and bottom is a requirement for Type I. Only one position of the 1000 subjects on the sheets of imperforate stamps contained this complete Type 1 stamp, Position 7R1E, making Scott #5 so exceedingly rare. (Image) (Image2) (Image3)
