James, in San Francisco, to Missouri Senator Francis P Blair in Washington, D.C.; enclosed, along with a brief cover letter dated Apr 5, 1857, sent "at the rquest of Col. Fremont", are newspaper clippings regarding the controversial Mariposa [Land] Grant purchased by John C. Fremont in 1846 but not legally settled until 1856, long after the land had become a booming Gold Rush center; stamp with minor perforation flaws, cover with edge wear, letter with repair separation; a fine historical document.
