The New Orleans postmaster required the ships to stamp the envelopes with the name of the ship on incoming mail. These were treated as Way letters at an additional charge of 1¢. The St. James exploded on Lake Pontchartrain on July 5, 1852, killing 30 people aboard, ex-Lippman, with 2009 Weiss certificate.

February 23rd 1852", manuscript "per St. James at bottom left, business contents that read in part, "This amount (six hundred dollars) we required for the benefit of Mr. Jordan Chavis, some of whose cotton you hae already sold." usual horizontal file fold through address, Very Fine, Jordan Chavis was a free mulatto plantation owner whose white neighbors successfully petitioned the legislature to remain in Mississippi when all free colored people were ordered to leave Mississippi or be enslaved in the 1850's. When his children crossed the Mississippi River between 1859 and 1875 for exile in Arkansas, they passed into the white world, leaving the family’s racial history completely behind.
